    At Hyves HQ at the Herengracht in Amsterdam, we are working with a young, flexible team on an international network of friends. Creativity, involvement and committed are very important; revolutionaries from 9 to 5 pm often bite the dust.

    Our wish list is growing considerably faster than the website and we're always looking for enthusiastic programmers and apprentices.

    Design and implementation of software architecture and the database of www.hyves.net, and/or mobile phone software.

    Profile

    1. Living in or around Amsterdam
    2. Completed education of computer science (Higher Vocational Education or University Education)
    3. At least 1 year of fulltime development experience with PHP, MYSQL and Java
    4. Hyver

    Development experience with .NET for Windows is also an advantage.

    Head of System Engineering

    Introduction: Hyves.net

    The social network Hyves.net is one of the largest websites in the Netherlands. Currently, the site has over 7,4 million members and reaches 55% of the Dutch population.

    Features include: profiles, photo's, blogs, messages, chat, schools, companies and music. Hyves can be used on a browser, a mobile phone and a desktop client. Recently Hyves joined the OpenSocial initiative, opening up the platform to 3rd party developers.

    The Hyves office is located in the center of Amsterdam. The company was founded in 2004. Hyves.net has been generating revenue since 2007 through advertisements and premium services. Currently about 100 FTE are working at Hyves.

    The Hyves platform is characterized by high-volume traffic and cutting-edge web 2.0 technology. More than 1500 Linux servers, located in 3 datacenters around Amsterdam, generate 4.5 billion pageviews per month. Currently, the Hyves platform stores more than 250 million photo's and video's, and each month 30 million more are uploaded.

    Responsibilities
    The head of System Engineering manages the ICT operations and facilitates the software development cycle.
    • The head of System Engineering is responsible for all ICT operations:
    Installation and management of the network, servers, operating systems, databases and applications.
    • Management of the system administration team (currently 15 people), including daily management and decision making, evaluations and hiring
    • Strategic planning & design
    • Procurement of servers, software and services
    • Coordination with the development team (currently 15 people) for software releases, maintenance and architecture changes
    • technical- and financial reporting, forecasting and administration the technical director reports to the CTO.

    Requirements Ideally, the candidate has worked several years in an executive role. The candidate has proven skills in hands-on, large-scale ICT operations and has managed project teams. Typical large-scale projects that would be considered a plus are:
    • Rollout of applications
    • Migration projects
    • Cluster-, grid- and/or high availability computing
    • Data warehousing

    Some typical characteristics of the candidate:
    • Minimally graduated at the Masters level, preferably in IT or IT-management
    • Preferably, the candidate has worked at a company focused on web 2.0 and internet applications.
    • Other suitable professional areas include telecom operators, software production, embedded systems development and/or software consulting.
    • In-depth- and detailed knowledge of programming, networking, servers, applications, storage, security and provisioning
    • At least 3+ years of experience in management. Has lead teams of 25+ people for several years.
    • Has managed ICT budgets (hardware/software/services) of 5M+ Euro annually
    • Be smart, get it right, get it done mentality

    The Hyves platform is largely build in PHP, in conjunction with the Smarty template engine and the Propel ORM layer. Other technology includes C++, Python, Java, JavaScript and ActionScript, to name a few.

    The team uses an Agile approach to software development. Trac supports the development process with a Wiki, ticket system and SCM system.
    Hyves has a job position for a Head of development. The head of development supervises the software development process at Hyves.net.

    Responsibilities
    The Head of development is responsible for the development of software. This requires a thorough focus on agile project management: get it done and get it right. The head of development is responsible for capturing the right requirements, facilitating the developers, QA, budget and planning. This includes external and internal development:

    - Internal software development applies to Hyves core features, such as messaging, chat, photo's and OpenSocial;
    - External software development applies to all the work done by partner companies, such as plugins for the desktop client, API-based development and integration with e- commerce partners.

    The Head of development is responsible for the software architecture of the Hyves platform. This includes:
    - architecture design and implementation
    - new technology and innovations (in the broadest sense)
    - application management
    - scaleouts and migrations Other responsibilities
    - recruitment of developers, in Holland as well as in offshore/near shore area's
    - security

    The head of Development works closely with product management and system engineering and reports to the CTO.

    Requirements
    The candidate should have a good idea what it takes to build Google, a browser, Halo 3, Skype, a C++ compiler or a social network such as Hyves. "What it takes" means everything to get these software products developed and shipped to the market.

    The candidate is an excellent and seasoned programmer and architect, and is a true master of the whole field of computing. There are no dark spots in the computer knowledge of the director of development. This may include knowledge of varying topics, such as the low-level details of processors, memory and disks to the high-level overview of scalable database archictures, service-oriented architectures and AJAX.

    The candidate is strongly aware of all sorts of trends and innovations in the field of computing. The web 2.0 space is probably the most dynamic business environment today, and it requires a Head of development that can easily absorb and use these new technologies. 2008 has so far seen an enormous emergence of new technologies, including the iPhone, SSD drives, Chrome and OpenSocial. We can only expect new technologies to evolve even quicker and the director of development should be on top of this.

    The candidate has worked several years in a project management role. The candidate has proven skills in hands-on management of large-scale software development project teams, with a strong dynamic incline and a focus on time-to-market. The candidate has a fanatic focus and an unstoppable drive to ship software. Experience with agile development is a must-have.
